The deep dive
I’ve lived through remodeling twice and had wildly different experiences.
The first time was when my wife and I bought our first home. I planned our kitchen and bathroom renovation, we hired someone we trusted to do the work, and had a great experience.
The second time was in the same house. The day of my daughter’s christening, we had a house fire (this is where my father-in-law makes a baptism by fire joke). There was significant smoke damage throughout, and the house was essentially gutted from the basement to the attic. The insurance company covered the cost, but we had to use one of their contractors. It was an awful experience. We lived through every horror story you hear about remodeling. They knew what I did for a living, but it didn’t matter. I knew what to look for, what to ask, who to ask it of, but it didn’t matter. I couldn’t be there 24/7.
The fire taught me something important. Two things actually:
- Never leave your dog alone in the house with a tray of cookies on the stove – he’ll inevitably try to get those cookies and accidentally set your house on fire (dog is fine, btw)
- When you’re remodeling your home, there is nothing more important than trust (empathy is a close second, if you were wondering)
One of the reasons that I choose to work at Case is that I know our clients can trust us to take care of their home like it was ours. I know that we will do whatever it takes to make you happy. I know what it’s like to live through a remodeling project – and I know that we will make you as comfortable as we can throughout the process.
Sure, there was some demolition, framing, plumbing and electrical work. But more than anything, this episode was about trust.
