You just spent an amazing holiday season with family, but you are glad the visiting came to an end – it’s exhausting. You renewed your gym membership after overindulging in the sweet treats your co-workers and friends shared – you couldn’t resist that 6th cannoli! You rang in the New Year and drank a little too much; thank goodness you were off the next day!
Have you prepared your list of 2015 goals to conquer? Do any remodeling/home projects top the list? Have a space that needs to be revamped, needs new life, needs a purpose? The new year is a great opportunity to turn a once useless or overlooked space in to something more purposeful. It’s easy with a little imagination and creativity…or an experienced designer… #callmemaybe?
Take this unused and overlooked attic space from the 2013 DC Design House for instance. With a little love and vision (by yours truly and my amazing Case Carpenters) it was repurposed to a quiet retreat. “The Away Room” is a great place to read, compose a letter to a friend, cozy up for a nap on a winter afternoon, or tuck away and stash next year’s presents. You did already start your shopping, right? Our transformation was designed with plenty of storage in mind and doubles as guest sleeping quarters. Now Uncle Bill can have one more glass of eggnog next year and spend the night!
Designer Tip: To make the space feel taller, we added subtle stripes (4” and 8” bands) to create volume. We also had this mirror custom made in the field to reflect the light from the dormer window and fill the space.
