UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Making your house your home is at the heart of everything we do for our clients. Sometimes that involves modifying the accessibility of a home. And making these changes might be easier and more aesthetically pleasing than you think. There are simple and attractive things that can be done, many for a modest investment, to make day-to-day living in your home as comfortable as possible.

At Case, we have Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS) as designated by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) to help assess needs and together come up with the best options for you or your family. This may be as simple as adding grab bars to the shower up to adding an elevator to give access to a second floor. It's important when doing a remodel to think not only about your needs today, but also about the future.

While the possibilities are virtually endless, here is a checklist of some of the things that can be considered when it comes to universal design.

General Living Areas

* Adapt lower level of floor for one-level living
* Increased general and specific task lighting
* At least one entry without steps
* Doorways 36" wide with off-set hinges on doors
* Levered door handles instead of knobs
* Light switches at 42" instead of 48"
* Lower window sills
* Residential elevator or lift

Bathroom

* Lever faucets
* Stall shower with low threshold and shower seat
* Grab bars at back and sides of shower, tub and toilet
* Higher bathroom counters
* Installation of medical response device
* Slip-resistant flooring in bathroom and shower
* Lower bathtub for easier access

Kitchen

* Kitchen cabinets with pull out shelves and lazy susans
* Easy to grasp cabinet knobs or pulls
* Task lighting under counters
